If they exist(!), is there a difference in the audiences themselves, and in the way that those audiences consume culture?  How likely/ easy is it for opera composers, works and productions to move successfully between regions with different ways of thinking about culture?

Is it fair to talk about the openness of an audience to the new, to the varied, to the different?  Clearly (think Opera Philadelphia), the opera company can do a lot to change local attitudes to opera and to new work, but are there underlying differences in the starting material?
